Instructions Course Objectives for Assignment: Explain how economic decisions are made and what economic concepts are used to evaluate economic trade-offs. Evaluate the economic impact of the major components of the healthcare system and assess their relative effect on health services management. Assignment Instructions As we learned in Week 1, health care spending is growing faster than the overall growth in the economy (as measured by GDP), and by 2026, it is expected to consume 20 percent of GDP. Given what we have learned from the course material in Weeks 1 and 2, specifically, write a briefing report (not an essay) that does the following: 1. From an economics perspective, a) Explain why health care spending cannot grow greater than the overall growth in the economy for an extended period without adverse consequences. b) Identify what economic constraints will occur (1) overall, and (2) in the healthcare industry, if such growth happens. 2. Identify two economic concepts (metrics) that can be used to evaluate the trade-offs between health care goods and services and other economic (non-health care) goods and services. For each of the two economic concepts (metrics): a) Define each economic concept (metric) clearly. b) From a government (policymakers) perspective, apply each economic concept (metric) to the current issue of rising health care spending and the trade-offs. 3. Evaluate the unique characteristics of health care that complicate your analysis above. Your briefing report should be at least four double-spaced pages, including a reference page, but excluding the required cover page. In writing your report, you should rely largely on reference material in the readings in this course (class) and our class summary slides from Week 1 and Week 2.
