In a 4-5 page paper, you will provide a narrative analysis of the curricular policy. Beyond a descriptive account of the policy, you will analyze the constituencies and perspectives that produced the mandate, the current state of its administrative implementation, and an interpretation of previous contexts that would sharpen our sense of its place within the historical arc traced in this course. Organization: Here is a potential scheme for organizing your paper: Introduction: Open with an engaging hook that alerts the reader to the relevance of the topic that you’ve chosen to research. The introduction should put forward a clear thesis and a roadmap that forecasts the organization of the paper or presentation. Part One: The Policy and its Origins This section should identify clearly what the policy is, what problem it seeks to address, where it is currently operative, and whose behavior it is meant to shape. Then, conduct a historical overview of the policy’s origins. You should relate both the policy’s literal origins in law (when and how it actually became a policy and who advocated for it) and its intellectual origins (a deeper history of the motives and ideas that preceded it in earlier eras). These two stories can be told separately or woven together. Part Two: Institutions and Implementation This section should explain how the policy works (or doesn’t) in its current stage of implementation. You should identify the current promoters or enforcers of this policy and describe their political, ideological, or occupational perspective. You should also describe who, if anyone opposes or critiques the policy and where they’re coming from. You should describe the institutions, both formal and informal, through which this policy is promulgated and takes effect. Part Three: Analysis and Conclusion In this section, you should advance your own analysis of the policy. All policies are tradeoffs, and you should be able to identify what specific conflict of forces or balance of extremes the policy is attempting to resolve. Your writing in this section should connect this dynamic to other historical examples or perspectives that we have learned about in the class. Ultimately, you should render your own verdict on this policy, explaining why you think this policy is either a decent bargain or a doomed experiment (or something more subtle) with regard to the problems it aspires to solve.
