Rebel Girls: Building Zines for Influential Feminists
WMST 101 –
Create a 5–10 page zine that explores the life, legacy, and feminist contributions of Patricia Hill Collins, author of Black feminist Though
influential figures in Women’s History and Feminism. Your zine should be creative, informative, and thoughtfully
designed to both educate and inspire your readers.
(I want everyone to learn about person, too!)
FOR FREE: Canva has Zine Templates you can use to build your own! You will have to make an account, but they
have plenty of free templates. If you prefer something a little more radical Electric Zine Maker is a name your own
price alt, open-source app you can use too. You are welcome to use any software that works – just have a reminder, zines are meant to be small (like a piece of paper folded in half) so don’t accidentally give yourself more
work than you need to by making something massive. This is the TLDR: what about this person and their
contributions should your fellow classmates know?
What to Include in Your Zine
Each zine must include the following core sections:
Cover Page
• Title of your zine (Optional: A creative subtitle or tagline!)
• The woman's name and image (drawing, photo, or collage)
• Your name and date
Biography Snapshot
• Birth/death dates (if applicable)
• Where she’s from
• Key identity markers (race, nationality, class, sexuality, etc.)
• Major life events that shaped her views and actions
Feminist Contributions
• What did this woman do that advanced the cause of women’s rights or gender justice?
• Was she part of a specific movement, organization, or wave of feminism?
• Include 1–2 key quotes or beliefs
• Make connections to social, cultural, or political movements – what was the bigger picture of the
movements they contributed to – relate back to course content.
Her Legacy
• How is her impact still felt today?
• Is she referenced in pop culture, education, or activism?
• Did she inspire future generations, laws, art, or academic work?
Creative Spread
Use space to get expressive:
• Drawings, poems, playlists, timelines, collages, mini comics, quotes, protest posters, etc.
• Think about how she might tell her own story.
Sources + Reflection
• Include any sources you used (at least 2 required, including 1 academic or news source).
• (As last page in Zine) Write a brief paragraph (3–5 sentences): What did you learn? What
surprised you? What are your final thoughts on this historical figure?
Zine Specs
Length: 5–10 pages (half-sheet or full-sheet folded format is fine)
Format: Handmade or digital (PDF, Canva, Google Slides, etc.)
Visuals: Required! Use photos, drawings, collage, or other visual elements
