Hi everyone,
Here is the information about the media assignment. Please review it
carefully.
The aim of this assignment is to get you to to apply some of the ideas that
you've encountered in the readings and lectures to stories related to sex
work in the news. As such, assignments must substantively engage with the
course material to receive a passing grade.
To complete this assignment, you will find news two articles related to the
topic of sex work from reputable, English language, online news sources.
One article must be about Canada, the other must have an international
focus. The news articles must have been written in the last two years. You
will summarize and analyze the articles. Your analysis must engage with
some of the topics, concepts, themes, and debates from the course material
(lessons, readings, etc).
Your assignment should be close to 1500 words, double-spaced, 12pt, and in
Times New Roman font. Please include page numbers. Also be sure your
assignment includes your name, the date, your student number, and a title
for the assignment (You can put all of this on a separate cover page if you
wish). The assignment will be submitted as a single .docx file through the
"Assignments" tab on the course Brightspace page. Information about grading
criteria can be found in the assignment rubric, which can be found through
the "Assignments" tab.
Here is some additional information about what is expected for this
assignment:
First, what is reputable? Any major newspaper or news website is fine. What
I'd like you to stay away from is blogs, or things like press statements
from governments, corporations, or non-profit organizations. Please also
avoid academic journal articles. Examples of news sources for Canada
include: CBC, The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, The National Post, etc.
There are many English-language international news sources. For example:
CNN, The New York Times, The Guardian, Haaretz, The Times of India, or The
South China Morning Post. Articles published in English by major news
agencies like The Associated Press, Bloomberg News, or Reuters are also all
fine. It's fine if both of your articles are from the same publication as
long as one article focuses on Canada, and one has an international focus.
Articles relating to the United States count as international. Either news
reporting or editorials are ok, as long as they discuss sex work.
Please do not purposefully choose the articles that I discuss at different
times in the course (I understand that this might happen by accident since
you haven't gotten through all the lecture material yet).
How do you relate the articles to the course content? There is no one right
way to do this. However, a reasonable approach would be to seek out
articles that directly relate to the discussions we've had on course themes
and topics (for example, policing, legal regulation, or activism). If you
choose articles about human trafficking or child sex trafficking, you still
are expected to discuss these topics in relation to the course material.
This means having at least some discussion about how these issues relate to
voluntary adult sex work.
Do the articles have to relate to each other? If the two articles that you
choose easily relate to each other, then great! However, this is not a
requirement. You can simply say in the introductory paragraph of your
assignment that you'll be discussing one article and then another.
Can you reference material that is not included on the course outline or
lessons? Yes, you may also reference scholarly studies (academic journal
articles, scholarly books, etc) for this assignment, so long as you are
using them to analyze your chosen news articles. However, you must be sure
to also engage with course material, as discussed above.
How do you cite the articles and course material? You can use any standard
citation style for this assignment. Failing to properly cite and reference
all information will result in a failing grade and could result in an
academic misconduct investigation. . It might be helpful to review my
previous announcement on citations. Please be sure to include web links to
your news articles. This will make grading much easier.
