Final Paper (30% of grade): You are required to write a final paper of no less than 2,500 words and no more than 3,500 words, doubled spaced, with 1-inch margins, and in a reasonably sized font. This essay will be completed at home and is designed to sharpen your observational and analytic skills in thinking about language and language use in everyday life. For this essay, you will have to record and transcribe about 30 minutes of naturally occurring speech. This can vary from friends having a conversation to a family dinner to a meeting for a club. Just make sure to get everyone’s consent before recording. Try to think of a fun activity to record—it will make the essay more enjoyable for you and for the reader! The final paper should include relevant readings from the class to contextualize your ideas and hypotheses. As you mention relevant literature in your essay, please make sure to cite the author’s name, year, and page number(s) as an in-text citation, and create a “References Cited” section at the end of your essay. Your bibliography can follow any academic style, just be consistent throughout your essay. If you wish, you can use one of our articles as a model for your bibliography.
