AP European History (AP Euro) – Long Essay Question (LEQ) Guide Assignment Overview The Long Essay Question (LEQ) accounts for 15% of your AP European History Exam score. Essay Choices You will choose one of three essay prompts, each covering a different historical period: 1450–1700 1648–1914 1815–2001 Time Limit 40 minutes Purpose The LEQ measures your ability to: Construct a historical argument Apply historical thinking skills Use specific historical evidence Analyze historical developments within a broader context LEQ Scoring Breakdown Category Points Contextualization 0–1 Thesis/Claim 0–1 Analysis and Reasoning 0–2 Argument Development / Evidence 0–2 Total 6 Points 1. Contextualization (0–1 Point) How to Earn the Point You must connect the essay topic to broader historical events, developments, or processes that occurred: Before the time period During the time period After the time period The context must be historically relevant and help frame the argument. Important Simply mentioning another event is not enough. You must explain: How the broader historical development relates to the prompt. Why it matters. Strong Example If the prompt concerns the French Revolution: Instead of writing: The Enlightenment influenced the French Revolution. Write: Throughout the eighteenth century, Enlightenment thinkers challenged traditional authority and promoted ideas of popular sovereignty and natural rights. These intellectual developments weakened support for absolutist monarchy and helped create the ideological foundations that contributed to the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789. Thesis Statement (0–1 Point) How to Earn the Point Your essay must include a thesis that: Is Historically Defensible The claim must be historically accurate. Responds to All Parts of the Prompt Address every aspect of the question. Takes a Position A thesis must make an argument. Location The thesis must appear in: Introduction or Conclusion and be presented clearly in one place. What NOT to Do Weak Thesis The Industrial Revolution changed Europe. This is merely a statement of fact. Strong Thesis Although the Industrial Revolution initially worsened working conditions for many laborers, it ultimately transformed European society by increasing economic productivity, encouraging urbanization, and laying the foundation for political reforms that expanded workers’ rights. Simply listing facts is insufficient. Weak Evidence Use The Estates-General met in 1789. The Bastille was stormed. Louis XVI was king. Facts are listed but not connected. Strong Evidence Use The financial crisis forced Louis XVI to convene the Estates-General in 1789, creating an opportunity for the Third Estate to challenge traditional political structures. This conflict contributed directly to revolutionary demands for political representation and helped trigger the French Revolution.
