Goal-setting program for learning a movement skill

Assignment Instructions

Assignment Directions: Not just in sport, but in your life's journey, you are endlessly faced with choices. What strategy or plan do you apply to those choices? Perhaps some are significant aspirations that without a detailed road map can never be realized. This week you have studied how to create that road map through goal-setting and the selection of an objective you wish to achieve. As you learned from Latham and Locke's groundbreaking research, goals are "the object or aim of an action, for example, to attain a specific standard of proficiency, usually within a specified time limit." Goals can be great motivators, especially as a person begins attaining parts of the goal. During this time, individuals realize that they are learning and getting better, and their self-esteem grows. However, goals can also be frustrating and self-defeating when not achieved. You have studied the key processes necessary to ensure goal-setting works: Establish a long-term goal. Create a series of short-term goals (three minimum) that are steps to achieving this long-term goal. Goals must be specific, measurable, challenging, obtainable, and participative where possible. Process goals must be included in the short-term task-oriented goals selection. Through measuring the process, one calibrates the amount of learning, and if a course correction is needed before it is too late. Creating and setting goals are key steps in the process of behavior change, but achieving them can be much harder than expected. This is where applying a comprehensive plan will make the difference between achievement and frustration. Review the assigned readings and the following website: 45 Goal Setting Activities, Exercises & Games (+ PDF) Then design a goal-setting program for an individual of your choice and describe it in a 5- to 7-page paper. This individual (a real person, not made up) does not have to be a specific sports athlete; examples can include fitness programs and military preparation. The program must address learning a movement skill of substance (not brushing your teeth). Learning movements must be a key component of the goals (so graduation from college with a specific degree does not fit the requirements for this assignment). You must apply at least one tool (e.g., a diary, poster) explained in the website referenced above. Select an individual, explain their situation, and illustrate the meaningfulness of the long-term goal you have chosen. Complete the attached goal-setting worksheet and include it with your paper as part of the 5–7 pages. Create a 3-to 5-page paper (the title and reference pages do not count in this page requirement) that explains in detail your goal-setting plan, including the "motivational tools" you will apply. Of particular importance is showing how the short-term goals are linked to the long-term goal, and how you will specifically measure each short-term goal. You must include at least four measurable short-term goals, and two of these goals must be process goal task-oriented goals. https://positivepsychology.com/goal-setting-exercises/
