Assignment Instructions
This scaffolded assignment allows students to delve into the history of marginalization in the U.S. and reflect on personal biases through engaging activities. The parts of this assignment include documentary analysis, research, timeline, reflection, and video presentation. This wholistic view of the chosen marginalized population will help students move towards more culturally grounded approach.
Assignment parts:
Part 1: Documentary
Choose one of three possible identities (Race, Documentation Status, or Native Americans). Watch related documentary from options below to create a presentation, timeline, and video recording.
Choose one of the following documentaries available on streaming platforms or YouTube (links to these are in the Topic Resources):
"13th" directed by Ava DuVernay (explores racial inequality and the U.S. prison system):https://youtu.be/krfcq5pF8u8?si=1g47yuLwzm2eqIoD
Part 2: Research and Timeline Creation
After watching the documentary, use scholarly research to create a timeline of the history of marginalization of the selected identity that you will add to your presentation. This timeline will be placed into one of the slides in your digital presentation:
Research two to four academic sources on significant events, policies, and social attitudes that have contributed to the marginalization of the selected identity.
Create a timeline including at least 10 significant events from the documentary.
Cite your sources in proper APA format.
Part 3: Reflection
Next, on three slides within your presentation, include the following:
Briefly summarize the events in documentary.
Explain personal biases about the identity presented in the documentary.
Regarding the events presented in the documentary, explain the impact of bias and history of marginalization on social work practice if the issues presented in the documentary are not addressed.
Part 4: Video Presentation – Culmination of Steps 1-3
Using all the information in Parts 1-3, create a digital presentation of 8-10 slides (not including the title and reference slides) using PowerPoint, Canva, Prezi, or another digital tool.
Next, use Zoom to record yourself explaining your presentation in a 5–10-minute video. In the video explanation of the timeline portion of the presentation, include a brief verbal description of each event noted in the timeline. Be sure that your instructor can see all the slides of your presentation in your video.
Provide the link to your Zoom recording to your GCU instructor in the attached “Exploring History of Marginalization” Word document.
