I have not been to a movie theater in years, mostly for two reasons. One cost, and the other being the ease of accessibility through applications such as Netflix or Amazon. When I did go to a movie theater to watch an up-and-coming movie, the demographics depended on the type of movie theater, location, and shows being offered. As an example, in Massachusetts, there is a dine in movie theater before Patriot Place opened Showcase Cinema. It was called Route One Cinema Pub, and this place still exists today. In my lifetime, it was the first movie theater where you could buy dinner and drinks and watch a movie. This was very popular with couples enjoying date night, or a family with older children, maybe middle school to high school age. At the time the price of dinner was very reasonable, so families, and younger couples could afford dinner and a movie, at a single location. I looked up the Cinema Pub for pricing today. Let’s say you had a family of five. Two adults and three children. Average price for all to eat a chicken finger meal and have a drink is roughly $81.75, and the movie tickets would be $50.00 for a total of roughly $131.75 for a family of 5 or $26.35/per person. In my opinion relatively inexpensive for a family night out (Route One Cinema Pub). Let’s compare that to Showcase Cinema at Patriot Place. Food and drink for a family is 5 is roughly ~$140.00/per person, plus a movie ticket is an additional $17.00/per person for general admission. Which is additional $85.00 for a family of 5. This brings us to a total of $216.75 for a family of 5 or $43.35/per person. Crazy expensive! I am not sure how a family of 5, let alone a couple on a date night, making minimum wage, can afford such a night out (Showcase Cinema de Lux Patriot Place. Showtimes & Tickets - Showcase Cinemas – US). Regal Theaters for an adult movie ticket is $19.99 a fee, and a child ticket is $18.99 a fee. For a family of 5 that is roughly ~100.00 without any food, drink, or snack. Again, crazy expensive. If I was the vice president of marketing for Regal Cinema have one heck of an uphill battle considering you can buy Netflix for the entire year starting at $83.88/per year. Why would anyone want to go to the Cinema? Why not, just wait until it is released on Netflix (Movie Showtimes & Movie Tickets | Regal. & Unlimited movies, TV shows, and more. Netflix). According to Statista.Com in November 2018 28% of people preferred watching a movie for the first time at the theater verse 15% who rather streaming as their preference. By June 2020 those number completely flipped with 36% preferring watching a movie for the first time via streaming, then 14% watching in a theater. That is a dramatic change in less than two years (Carollo, L. (2023, January 5). With that said the demographic of those who attend movie theaters near where I live, are adult couples, or families who have the ability to provide their families with what I would say in my opinion is an expensive night out. If I was the vice president of marketing, I would look to challenge myself, with providing a more affordable option to families and single couples, or single friends. I would also investigate if there was an option to provide a streaming service before competitors are allowed access to the films, and challenge myself, if there were options available to show the movie to the audience, as if you were in the cinema, but you were in the luxury of your own home.
