Educational history and future visions of education
Education
Assignment Instructions
Overview
This final project invites you to apply everything you have learned this semester to reimagine how we tell educational history and what we believe is possible.
Instead of writing a traditional academic paper, you will craft a Porch Conversation (Thomas, 2026), a historically grounded, imaginative dialogue between:
• Educational thinkers from U.S. history
• School community voices from oral histories (your own or from midterms)
• A future vision for education shaped by these conversations
This method draws from storytelling traditions, especially in the U.S. South, where porches have long served as spaces for intergenerational learning, reflection, and resistance. Through creative writing, research, and oral history, you’ll engage with the question: How can conversations across time help us understand education’s past and reshape its future?
Project Components
Component Description
Porch Setting Describe where and when your porch conversation takes place. Ground it in a real historical moment or region we have studied (e.g., Reconstruction-era South, Progressive Era Chicago, 1980s New York).
Four Educational Voices from History Select at least four educational figures from course readings. Introduce each briefly and explain why they were invited to your porch.
Teacher/School Interview Voices Include at least two quotes or themes from teacher oral histories (from your midterm or new interviews). These voices should interact with or challenge the historical guests.
Central Educational Theme Focus the conversation around a key issue (e.g., segregation, curriculum, testing, inclusion, teacher identity, justice, etc.). Make sure this theme ties the whole piece together.
Porch Dialogue or Storytelling Use a creative format (narrative, script, story) to bring the voices into conversation. Historical figures and students should engage with one another across time.
Future Vision End with a speculative “what if?” moment: If these voices shaped education today or tomorrow, what might schools look and feel like? What would change?
Citations & Author’s Note Use APA style to cite all sources, including readings and interviews. Include a 150–250 word author’s note explaining your creative decisions and how your work is grounded in research.
