This assignment challenges you to analyze how institutional leaders in higher education respond to crises—events that test their capacity to lead under pressure, make ethical decisions, and manage competing stakeholder demands. By examining a real-life crisis, you will assess the effectiveness of leadership decisions using theoretical frameworks and offer alternative, evidence-based strategies. Engaging in this type of analysis helps you develop critical skills for interpreting complex leadership challenges and applying theory to practice. It will also deepen your understanding of the decision-making processes that shape institutional outcomes during periods of disruption or uncertainty. Assignment Instructions 1. Select a Higher Education Crisis Choose a real-world event from higher education where leadership was tested in a significant way. Some examples include: Campus closures due to enrollment downturns and financial issues Controversial speaker or free speech incidents Title IX or discrimination investigations Faculty union actions or strikes Major budget deficits or institutional restructuring Cybersecurity breaches or data privacy failures Leadership turnover amid governance disputes Natural disasters or public health crises (COVID-19) Use credible sources to research the event, such as: News articles from higher education outlets (e.g., Inside Higher Ed, Chronicle of Higher Education, EDUCAUSE) Official university communications or board reports Peer-reviewed journal articles or policy analyses 2. Analyze the Leadership Response Identify the key leaders involved and summarize the actions they took. Discuss how these leaders navigated the crisis. Compare and contrast the leadership styles and strategies used. 3.
