OBSERVATION PAPER INSTRUCTION SHEET
Throughout your reading you will discover a variety of developmental
theories that attempt to explain how and why we behave the way we do and
how our behavior changes throughout our lives. The purpose of this
assignment is to give you an opportunity to relate what you are learning to
your own observations and experiences.
In your observation reports I would like you to tell me about a behavior
you have observed be very specific with your example (in someone else or in
yourself), and discuss how that behavior can be explained by one of the
theories presented in this course.
For instance, you might describe the behavior of a two-year-old that you
have had the opportunity to be around, and how that child's behavior fits
into Piaget's stages of cognitive development. Since this course studies
behavior from birth to death, you may describe the behavior of anyone,
regardless of his or her age. The important thing to remember is to relate
that behavior to one of the theories you have studied in this class. Feel
free to read ahead in the textbook for the purpose of completing this
assignment.
Your papers should describe the theory you've chosen, describe your
personal observation, and then explain how the theory does or does not
support your personal observation. When choosing a topic, be sure that you
focus on a specific theory that deals with that topic. For instance, if you
choose "gender-identity development," be sure to use a specific
theory about gender development (your text describes several of them) in
your paper. Your observations should be specific experiences you have had
or observed, not simply generalizations of what you've witnessed over the
years.
These papers should be a minimum of 500-300 words, but most will be longer
than that. Any one of the different topics may be selected from the choices
listed above.
Your reports must be word-processed (typed!) with double-spacing. The paper
must be a Microsoft Word document, or saved as an .rtf (rich text format)
file. Your papers will be uploaded to Canvas, and will be evaluated by Turn
It In anti-plagiarism software. The font size should be no larger than 12
point.
THIS IS NOT A RESEARCH PAPER! This is a paper in which you describe your
experiences and observations, and relate them to a theory presented in this
course. You do not need to cite sources in your paper for information
obtained in your textbook, unless you are quoting that material. (Of
course, if you use other references, you must properly cite those sources.)
Specific instructions:
1. Name and briefly describe the developmental theory or principle that you
are going to describe in your paper. You are to write a short report based
on actual observations of human subjects, selected from among the following
topics:
a. Cognitive Development (Piaget or Vygotsky)
b. Self-concept
c. Modeling / Observational Learning
d. Psychosocial Development (Erikson)
e. Moral Development (Kohlberg or Gilligan)
f. Language Development
g. Gender-Role Development
h. Identity Development
i. Adult Development (Choose a specific theory)
j. Death & Dying
2) Describe your observation/experience, and explain how it relates to the
developmental theory.
3) Your paper must be typed, double-spaced, and submitted through Canvas.
Your paper will be graded according to the following criteria:
4 points Description of developmental theory or principle
6 points Personal observation/experience
4 points Explanation of how your observation relates to the developmental
theory
3 points Well-written, few mechanical errors
3 points On time and properly submitted
