Paper details:
You will write an alternative essay on any aspect of an “American artifact”
of your choice (a film, TV show, advertisement, music video, news excerpts,
website etc.) Essay should not be descriptive, i.e. recitations of
Wikipedia pages. Instead, they should raise questions about your artifact,
put the course’s texts in conversation with each other and, if you like,
connect the text to contemporary issues.
Your object should relate to questions we have discussed in class – for
example, it might represent or discuss contemporary xenophobia, the
afterlives of slavery, the construction of the canon, the myth of the “self
made man” or American exceptionalism etc. Try to connect it to our readings
(though you need not connect it to the specific day’s reading – for
example, if you want to discuss the “city upon a hill” image in
20th-century political discourse and it’s Edgar Allan Poe day, don’t feel
obliged to discuss Poe – go back to Winthrop!
Alternatively, you might want to present another text from a writer’s
corpus (talk to us about Thoreau’s John Brown speech alongside Walden, for
example) or a sociohistorical phenomenon (the rise of lyceum culture in the
19th-century, the publication conditions of the early African American
press, etc.)
You can choose one of the following Required Texts:
The Norton Anthology of American Literature A and B, 9th Edition Ed. Robert
Levine
Leonora Sansay. Secret History; or the Horrors of St. Domingo
Henry James, The Bostonians
Pauline Hopkins. Of One Blood
