You'll be reading more about theories concerning Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids next week. This week's materials cover pseudoarchaeology in general and theories about Sumerian aliens. This week's discussion requirement has two parts. The first is not a discussion at all, but an anonymous survey available under "Course Materials" that is based on the one described in the Feder reading. I will only see if you've taken the survey at the end of the week--I'll never see which survey yours was or what answers you provided. We'll discuss the results of the survey next week. Taking the survey will be part of your Week 6 grade. The second part is a discussion post of at least 500 words in response to the following questions: First, what is your impression of the difference between a "pseudo" archaeological theory and a scientific archaeological theory after reading Feder's "Quick Start Guide" and chapter on "Science and Pseudoscience?" What is Feder's main point in his narrative about his experience with The Morning of the Magicians? What are two motivations Feder says can lead someone to misrepresent evidence from the past and create a pseudoarchaeological theory? What do you think (what's your own opinion) is one reason people choose to believe these theories? What do you think is a good thing to keep in mind when deciding whether or not a theory you hear/read about the past is based on solid evidence? Then, what is Zecharia Sitchin's main theory about the Sumerians, as it is presented in the documentary Ancient Aliens Debunked? What is one way either Sitchin or the television series Ancient Aliens misrepresents evidence about the ancient Sumerians, according to the documentary Ancient Aliens Debunked? Comments from Support Team: The discipline is Topics in History of Science, Technology, & Medicine. Discipline: Ancient Literature: Expressions of the Living Past
