Overview
This has been a fast-paced overview of cognitive science. It is beneficial
to stop at this point and reflect on your learning--what *really* stands
out in your mind. In other words, what are the "big ideas" you think best
define your understanding of cognitive science.
Your post can and should be informal--use "I" statements, refer in general
to concepts and/or theories, research, etc., without worrying about
citations and references. I really want to know what ideas *stick*--what
ideas you can discuss with clarity and confidence off-the-top of your head.
Criteria for Assignment
- You must list *at least three* big ideas and discuss each briefly
(approximately three sentences or one short paragraph). Separate each big
idea with an appropriate heading.
- At the end of your post, list at least one concept about which you
remain confused under the heading "Muddy Concepts."
-
Scoring (15 pts.)
Scoring is holistic and will be determined by your use of appropriate
terminology, accuracy in describing concepts, and clarity of thought. A
minimum of 12 points will be earned as long as there are three big ideas
discussed and at least one muddy concept listed. A score of 15 will be
earned if terminology is appropriate, details for the big ideas are
accurate, the muddy concept is explained, and the discussion overall is
clear. A score of 13 or 14 indicates there is a minor flaw or two in the
reflection (e.g., grammatical errors, unclear portions, inaccuracy in
terminology).
Informal Writing Tips
In general, citations and references are *not* needed for the reflection
assignment. *The reflection should emanate from the knowledge stored in
your long-term memory*. It is supposed to be informal and can be more
general. I'm interested in what you have learned about some of the concepts
in the course (e.g., CRUM, AI, consciousness, etc.). This is a personal
reflection, *not* an academic report.
HOWEVER, if you do paraphrase a passage from a source or directly quote a
source, then you *must* provide a citation. [I assume you will be
reflecting on course materials, so no need to provide references.]
BUT, if you are paraphrasing/quoting info, *you are doing more work than
you need to do*. The assignment is worth only 15 points, and should take
you no more than an hour to write (if even that long). Don't overcomplicate
the assignment. :-)
