Module Paper 1:
The song “Dixie,” also known as “Dixie’s Land,” or “I Wish I Was in Dixie,”
was a very popular song originally performed in guise of blackface
minstrelsy. In the American Civil War, both the Confederate and Union
armies adopted the song as anthems in their own way. Write a word paper
(approximately 3 pages, typed double-spaced) in which you describe how both
the Confederate and Union armies used adaptations of the song “Dixie.”
Through both an analysis of the lyrics and the historical aspects of
minstrelsy performance, discuss how the meaning of the song changed.
