Order info Subject: Philosophy Topic: Does God exists? Type of work: Essay Level: Undergraduate Number of pages: 5 pages = 1375 words Grade: High Quality (Normal Charge) Formatting style: MLA Language Style: English (U.S.) Sources: 0 Deadline: 24 Jun 2019 22:12 Created: 23 Jun 2019 07:08 Website Region: United States Price: 250/pg Order instructions 1) Take up a yes/no question, such as “Is it possible that there is more than one uncaused cause?” Whatever question you choose should be able to be answered by a “yes” or a “no.” Not all questions can be answered with a “yes” or “no”, such as “How does Aquinas make use of the thought of Islamic intellectuals?” If you want to take up this issue, cast your inquiry as a question that is answered with a yes or no. 2) Your question must be properly philosophical, theological, or interpretive. An example of a properly theological question would be, “Is the Trinity opposed to Divine Simplicity?” An example of an interpretive question would be, “Does Thomas’s treatment of God in the Summa theologiae contradict his treatment of God in the Summa contra Gentiles?” 3) You can choose any question that you wish so long as the question is related to the content of this course. If you have any questions about whether your question is appropriate, please ask. Papers on inappropriate topics will be penalized, so if you have any question about whether your topic is appropriate, please ask. 4) Avoid choosing a question whose answer would be the same for virtually every intelligent person, e.g., “Does Aquinas think that God exists?” The one exception to this rule is if you are going to answer the question in a way that almost every intelligent person would not. “No, despite appearances, Aquinas does not actually think that God exists....” By doing this you will avoid defending a thesis that which is in no need of defense and will most likely be uninteresting. 5) This yes/no question should be the title of your paper. 6) The first line of your paper indicates how you answer the question at hand, e.g., “Yes, Aquinas is more Aristotelian than Augustinian because…” There is no need for introductory remarks such as, “Thomas was born on a warm day in Italy….” 7) Make sure you define any important terms that may be used ambiguously in your question, e.g., “By ‘composed,’ I mean….” “I define ‘per se causality as ……” Seek definitions that capture the essence of what you are talking about rather than mere nominal definitions from a dictionary. See Peter Kreeft, Socratic Logic, chapter four (IV) on how to define well. 8) Write your paper for an intelligent reader that has already read everything we’ve read in class and attended all class sessions. Do not simply summarize what we’ve talked about in class or the readings. Move forward presupposing what we’ve read and said in class as the basis to develop your thesis. 9) After the first line, in the next two paragraphs, offer two arguments or justifications for thinking that your answer to the question (your thesis) is true. In other words, if someone were to ask you, why did you answer ‘yes’ (or ‘no’), what argument would you offer? “I believe my thesis that [your thesis here] because….All men are mortal, and Socrates is a man.” Make each paragraph its own independent argument for believing what you believe about the thesis. 10) Make sure that your arguments are not simply repeating reasons/arguments/perspectives that we have already talked about in class or in the readings. 11) In the third paragraph, offer an objection to your view that would be raised by an intelligent, well-read person. Make your objection strong. If you do not consider the best objections to your view, your paper will be weakened (straw man fallacy). It is often a good idea (but it is not required) to ask people who disagree with you why they disagree with you. You could also search the internet or books to find those that disagree with your view. 12) Avoid plagiarism. Make sure to indicate whether the words you use come from another source by using quotation marks. You could use reasons offered in class in the objection sections of your paper in order to disagree with them. 13) In the fourth paragraph, rebut this objection. Show why it does not apply to what you say or why it is untrue or why this is not a problem for your view. Make sure that your response to the objection is not simply repeating arguments/reasons/responses that we have already talked about in class or in the readings. In other words, please use your original thinking (or use your outside research) to contribute to the paper something other than a summary of what we have learned about in class or in the assigned readings. 14) In the fifth paragraph, offer another objection to your view as in step 11) above. 15) In the next paragraph, refute this objection as in step 13) above. 16) Carefully proofread your paper. Please staple the pages together. 17) Your paper should be 12 point font, double spaced, normal margins. EXAMPLE Is Aquinas implicitly critiquing Divine Justice? Yes, I believe Aquinas is implicitly critiquing Divine Justice because (first paragraph indicating first argument for your thesis follows). A second reason that shows that Aquinas is implicitly critiquing Divine Justice is that (second paragraph indicating second argument for your thesis follows). One consideration that might lead some people to reject my thesis is (fourth paragraph offering an objection to your view). This view is mistaken because (fifth paragraph refuting the objection because of false premise(s) invalid reasoning, or equivocal terms). But still others claim that Aquinas vindicates Divine Justice because (sixth paragraph with different objection to your thesis). This claim does not make sense on further consideration because (seventh paragraph follows refuting the last objection on account of its false premise(s), invalid reasoning, and/or equivocal terms). The topic is "Does God exists?" Please use your own reasoning and the book Summa Contra Gentiles: Book One, Thomas Aquinas, to finish this paper. Please strictly follow the example provided at the end of the instruction. Thank you!
