Argumentative/Persuasive Essay For this essay, develop your own idea about something and form an argument. Be creative. There's an argument in almost everything. Essay ideas can be found on Blackboard. Research to find documented evidence to reinforce your side. Remember that personal taste, facts, and settled issues cannot be argued. Focus on the how and why of your topic. Research alternative viewpoints and use them to support your side either implicitly or explicitly. Use the rhetorical strategies: logos (logic), pathos (emotion), and ethos (ethics) to lead the audience to arrive at a similar conclusion. Include in-text citations and a References or Works Cited page. Adhere to either APA or MLA format and style. Be sure to check the "banned topics" list! If you write about something on the list without receiving permission, the essay will not be graded and you will be asked to start over! Requirements Develop a clear and arguable thesis (be willing to change a thesis that doesn't work!) Provide supportive, documented evidence for your argument Avoid faulty reasoning Consider your audience and anticipate disagreements Acknowledge that there are alternative viewpoints, but always counter back to why yours is best Practice using a variety of valid sources Minimum of 10 non-website sources (news outlets are the exception) from 3 different genres Four different sources must be cited within the document Use a consistent formal tone in 3rd person (no "you" or "I") 6–8 full pages of text (onto the 7th page for full credit) Include a Works Cited or References page (this does not count as part of the total page requirement) Summary of Key Requirements Format: APA or MLA Length: 6–8 full pages of text Sources: At least 10 non-website sources from 3 genres Citations: Minimum 4 different sources cited in the essay Writing style: Formal, third person only Must address opposing viewpoints and provide counterarguments Include a References/Works Cited page Avoid banned topics unless approved by the instructor
