One of our projects will be a 1500 word term paper that you will work on
throughout the semester. Basic instructions are copied on this page, and
weekly activities and assignments related to the term paper will are
programmed into canvas with more details. I have included in our weekly
reminders several videos from the library and guidelines from smarthinking
to assist your writing. There is no need to wait for the weekly reminders!
Set aside time to get started early, so that you are not rushed as the due
dates come up later in the semester. The first part of this project is a
book summary. Later on you will use the book summary to compose an
introductory paragraph for your term paper. Book summary Instructions (2%):
Read one of the assigned books: Aeschylus – Persians and Other Plays (the
assigned plays from this book are also available free online: The Persians
OR Prometheus Bound) or Herodotus – On the War for Greek Freedom (The full
text is also available for free online) Write a 300 word plot summary
focusing on historical events within the book. Your plot summary should
demonstrate that you have read understood the content of the entire book.
Remember to state the title and author of the book you select at the
beginning of the summary. Additionally, if you use any other source
materials, those sources need to be referenced in your essay and listed in
your bibliography. Outside sources are not necessary. In addition to
Wikipedia, sites such as the following are NOT ACCEPTABLE SOURCES:
Sparknotes, CourseHero, Cliffnotes, Pinkmonkey, Bookrags, Gradesaver,
Studygs, Questia, Bartleby, Studyworld, Freebooknotes, Bibliomania,
Cummingsstudyguides, Shmoop, Studenthacks, eNotes, Schoolbytes, Antistudy,
Jiffynotes, Studylit, Free-booknotes, Literaturesummary, Thebestnotes,
Monkeynotes, justdomyhomework, myhomeworkdone, assignmentgeek, hoeworkdoer,
paymetodoyourhomework, Barronsbooknotes, Books-summary, Bookwolf, Madnotes,
Summarycentral, Coolata, Wikisummaries, Novelguide, Allreaders, Studyworld,
4literature, Homework-online, Nimblespirit. Any detected use of these or
similar sites will be reported as cheating, so please write your own
summary (and then your own term paper) in your own words. Rough Daft (4%):
Next you will need to research answers to one set of term paper questions:
What does Herodotus believe was the primary reason for War between Persia
and its Greek opponents? How did the decisions and the actions of the
Persians, Athenians and Spartans each lead to conflict? Does Herodotus
believe that war was inevitable? Was any one party responsible for the War?
Look closely at Herodotus’ analysis of both Persian and Greek policies in
writing this essay. Do you believe that Herodotus recounts the story of the
“War for Greek Freedom” accurately? Or do you believe that his account is
biased in favour of the Greeks (or Persians)? Compare Herodotus’ account
with the textbook, the material from the lectures and outside sources (the
use of other sources is optional – make sure to cite them if used) for
evidence of accuracy or bias. Give as many examples from the text itself as
possible What are Xerxes’ the primary motivations for the invasion of
Greece in Aeschylus’ “Persians?” What is his character? What is his
greatest flaw? Why does the Persian invasion fail? How does the play’s
description of the War compare to the historical reality (consult your
class-notes, the textbook or outside sources)? Do you believe that
Aeschylus’ depiction of Persian society and of Xerxes himself is fair? Does
Aeschylus show genuine sympathy for his Persian characters? Describe the
character of Zeus as it is depicted in “Prometheus Bound.” How is the Greek
idea of a supreme deity different than that of the Judaeo-Christian
tradition? Is Zeus just and merciful? What is Prometheus’ crime? What is
the nature of his punishment? How does Hera’s torment of Io contrast with
Prometheus’ ordeal? Do you believe that Prometheus is morally justified in
his defiance of Zeus? Keep track of which notes you take are direct
quotations rather than your own words, and also keep track of the sources
of all information - quoted or not. Outside sources are not necessary.
However, any outside sources used must be cited appropriately. I recommend
listing each part of the question on a separate page, and then taking notes
about the details you will write to answer it, along with the bibliographic
reference and page number for all information that you collect. That way
you won't have to look up the references later. Later, when you use your
notes to write your paper you will be required to include a bibliography of
all sources other than the actual assigned reading, in order to avoid
plagiarism. The following is the proper form for bibliography citations:
Author’s Last Name, Author’s First Name, Title of Book (City of
Publication: Publisher, copyright date) Remember that direct quotes must
ALWAYS be enclosed in quotation marks and cited in footnotes or endnotes.
In addition you must cite the source of any ideas or information you have
obtained from outside sources, even if you have paraphrased those ideas.
The following form is to be used for books cited in footnotes/endnotes:
Author’s Name, Title of Book, Publisher, copyright date, page number. Once
you have taken notes about the term paper question, you are ready to
prepare the rough draft. Like the book summary, the rough draft is an
opportunity to earn extra credit towards your final term paper grade.
Writing Instructions: Use 300 words of your plot summary as an introductory
paragraph, ending that paragraph with an introductory thesis statement
listing the three main topics to be addressed by your term paper. Write
three 300 word body paragraphs together thoroughly answer all parts of the
set of term paper questions you select. Each body paragraph should focus on
one of the main topics listed in your thesis statement. Make sure you
include specific details to support your answers to the term paper
questions. Be sure to reference any outside source material with footnotes
in your essay and list your sources in your bibliography. Finally, end your
term paper with a concluding paragraph. Your concluding paragraph should
begin with a concluding statement that addresses all the main topics of
your paper. The remainder of the concluding paragraph should summarize the
answers from your body paragraphs and compare those examples to details
from the plot of the book. The conclusion paragraph should be about 300
words, and so the five paragraphs of your complete paper should be about
1500 words long. You do not need to put your name on your draft, it will be
linked to you by canvas. We will have a peer review next, and you can keep
your review anonymous by not typing your name on the page. Extra Credit!
After the rough draft assignment locks everyone who has turned in a rough
draft will automatically be assigned an anonymous peer review. For those
who complete it, this extra credit is worth 100 bonus points that will
automatically count in the same category as your book summary. In your
review please consider: is it clear which set of questions is being
answered? Does it appear that all questions in a set where answered, or
were certain questions skipped? Does the draft follow the 5 paragraph
format we have been working on (introduction ending in a thesis statement,
3 body paragraphs, conclusion) ? If not, were you able to quickly find the
main points of the paper, or were there gaps in detail and organization?
You will need to fill out a rubric AND leave a comment to be marked
complete. Make sure you click save! Final Paper (14%): After our peer
reviews we will work on revising, proof-reading and editing before turning
in our final papers. All the instructions and guidelines from the draft
apply to the final paper. The final papers will be graded with the same
rubric as the rough draft, and so everyone who completes a rough draft will
have some feedback from me. You may also have some helpful feedback from
your peer and/or a smarthinking tutor! Take advantage of this time to
improve your paper and earn the best grade possible.
Based on your reading of one of the assigned term paper books, please list
details you will use to concisely respond to these prompts: What is the
title? Who is the author? What is the author's purpose in writing this?
List a basic timeline of events from your reading. Make sure you include
all the major events from the entire reading. You will need these details
when you write your book summary.
