The AM has trapped the 5 people there because it has become so intelligent but as the narrator explains, the AM cannot go anywhere and has limitations that makes it feel trapped. It has so much hatred for what created it that it killed many in an immense rage but kept the 5 to prolong its power over humanity. The only way they can escape is by killing themselves. Benny tried to escape but the AM stopped him, and in a very disturbing manner made him blind. After Benny goes insane and stars to eat Gorrister the narrator realizes that the only way out is to kill everyone and himself. He kills Benny and Gorrister then finally he kills Ellen. AM stops him before he is able to kill himself and turns his body almost slug-like with no mouth. The narrator now, can never escape and AM is now in more of a rage so he will be tortured for eternity.
