*Music of War and Peace:*
LIB-320: THE MUSIC OF WAR AND PEACE
Final Paper
------------------------------
OVERVIEW
The final paper provides you an opportunity to synthesize what you have
learned in the course by developing and supporting a position (personal
perspective) on the different functions and uses of music during times of
war, peace, protest, and remembrance. In this paper you will analyze and
evaluate your own and others' assumptions about the extent to which music
reflects a society's view and response to war and its aftermath. In this
regard, you may wish to draw upon your module discussion forums, papers,
and reflections in developing and supporting your position. [CO1, 2, 3, 4,

FINAL PAPER TOPIC
Music can be viewed as a mirror of a society’s feelings toward war. In this
class we have examined how societies dealt with war through music: from
music written during wars to music written in remembrance of past wars.
In a 2750 word paper (approximately 10 pages, typed double-spaced),
comprehensively examine the music used and the wars discussed in this
class. How was music used for different functions during each of the wars
discussed? What genres and styles were used? And how did society react to
these musical works?
In addition, compare and contrast one piece written during a war and one
piece written as a memorial to a past war (any of the pieces from Module 8:
Songs of Remembrance would work for the piece written after a war). How do
these pieces function differently? Elements to discuss include the intended
audience, the genre, the location of the performance, how society’s views
of the war changed between the composition of the two pieces, and what your
own reaction to these two pieces is.
If you have questions about the requirements of the paper, be sure to
discuss them with your mentor well in advance of the final submission.
Consult the Course Calendar for this paper's due date. It must be submitted
by the last day of the semester.
