Economics Question
Learning Goal: I'm working on a economics writing question and need a
sample draft to help me learn.
prepare a 15-page research paper that compares two nonprofit organizations
with similar missions. The paper will describe the organizations and apply
theories and concepts studied in class. Specifically, the paper will
examine the organizations’ mission statements, as well as challenges the
organizations have faced in managing in at least two of the following areas:
- Personnel or volunteers
- Executive leadership
- Board development
- Fundraising and/or financial management
- Strategic management
There are essentially two parts to this paper. The first part is a
narrative about the organizations. The first part describes the
organizations: their mission, history, purpose, size, age, geographic or
other territorial mandates, target population, funding sources, and other
such demographics as you think would be helpful to the reader. If any of
these have changed significantly, you’ll want to include them here. You’ll
also want to discuss how the two are related – do they have similar
missions, but differ in their geographic focus? Do the organizations
compete with one another? Do they collaborate?
The second part requires an application of the theories and concepts from
class to your particular organization. This is the part of the paper that
allows students to demonstrate their grasp of the concepts in a class by
integrating the theories and concepts studied into an analysis of the two
organizations. The paper should assess internal strengths and weaknesses,
as well as external opportunities and threats facing both organizations.
Papers should include at least 7 academic (peer-reviewed) research
articles, plus additional references from popular media accounts
(newspapers, internal reports, magazines, and organizational websites). The
information from popular media accounts should be used to gather general
information to "tell their stories." This is where you'll find information
about the organization's history, the groups and individuals served,
mission, successes (potentially its struggles).
The best papers typically use organizations to demonstrate the relevance of
theories that we study in class (personnel or volunteers; executive
leadership; board development; fundraising and/or financial management;
strategic management; etc.). Think of this as an opportunity to demonstrate
mastery of material from class and apply our studies to real-world cases.
In other words, when discussing the managerial concepts, it is important to
include references from peer-reviewed journal articles (often students
start with the ones referenced in the text or weekly lecture notes).
Please use APA style (with inline citations). It is also important to note
that this paper does not need to be boring just because it has citations.
You are telling a story. Some helpful hints:
- Use relatively short sentences and paragraphs and use active voice verbs.
- A good rule of thumb is to aim for three-sentence paragraphs.
- Try to follow a logical outline.
- Describe what you are going to say… Say it… Tell me why you said it.
- Make sure each paragraph has a specific purpose, and make sure you put
your thoughts in context.
- Be sure to include a few sentences that begin with "In other words..." -
or an equivalent phrase that allows you to rephrase complex or critical
thoughts.
