Instructions for an Interview with a Client of a School Psychologist
Instructions for an Interview with a Client of a School Psychologist.
This project first involves conducting an interview with someone that has
been a client of a School Psychologist. There is a detailed interview form
(Part 1) that will guide the interview, which you will complete with the
responses of the client (parent, student, school employee, etc.). The next
step in the assignment (Part 2) is to integrate the interview responses
with the content presented from the textbook and articles, providing an
organized critique of the Psychologist/Client interaction.
Part 1)
Interview questions
Below are 10 questions that are intended to provide a framework for
your interview. The below questions relevance to any particular client you
interview will vary. Some individuals have only had a single interaction
with a school psychologist, while others have met many school
psychologists. Other clients may have had many meetings with a particular
school psychologist over several years.
You may make some modification of the question wording ask in your
interview (to make them more appropriate to the particular client you
interview), but don’t substantially alter the character of the listed
questions.
There are the 10 questions I would like you to ask
- 1) Ask the person you are interviewing to describe the circumstances
in which the interviewee encountered the School Psychologist. Include a
statement of the interviewees position in the encounter (parent, student,
teacher, nurse, administrator, relative, etc.) If the response is brief,
ask them to tell you more about the experience.
- 2) Ask if the psychologist presented in a professional manner?
Describe the appearance, demeaner, listening skills, patience,
thoroughness, efficiency in completing reports, etc.
- 3) Was the interaction a one-time meeting, or multiple meetings.
Describe the type or types of meetings or interactions.
- 4) Did the psychologist seem interested in assisting with the
situation?
- 5) Did the Psychologist explain the process of what would occur
following this meeting or interaction?
- 6) Did the Psychologist appear empathic to the interviewee and others.
- 7) Did the Psychologist seem cognizant of any cultural, ethnic,
gender, racial or other issues that could be in play in the creation of the
referral, or a resolution, or intervention.
- 8) If the psychologist made decisions regarding evaluation, placement
or interventions for a student, did the decision appear to be data driven?
Please explain.
- 9) Create your own question that will add depth to what has already
been discussed.
- 10) Create a final Summary question of your choosing.
Part 2 )
Integration
The Part 2 integration is taking the information you gained, and the
thoughts/reactions you have about answers the client provided in the Part 1
interview, and then integrate various course materials into your write-up.
You will need to write a 3-4 page Part 2 integration section, with the last
page being a Reference page. You will need a minimum of *three references* from
the course materials used in this section, with proper in-text citations
and references.
Summary
The complete paper will include a Part 1 that lists the questions you
asked and the answers the client provided. Please provide their work, not a
summary. The Part 1 will be of an indeterminate length, depending on the
length of the answers.
There should be a Title Page formatted similar to that for the Case Studies.
The Part 2 should begin on a new page, and be 3-4 pages including a
Reference page.
