Advanced Practice Nursing Roles

Topic Type Assignment Instructions To prepare for this assignment you must start as early as DAY 1 of this course. Seek out a nurse with an advanced nursing practice background to interview. Preferably someone who has completed the role you are preparing for in this program. Most of you are in the MSN Nurse Practitioner (NP) program so look for an NP that you may have looked up to as a mentor or model. If you cannot find a nurse practitioner (NP),you have the option to interview other APN (DIRECT CARE) roles: the certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), the clinical nurse specialist (CNS), or the certified nurse midwife (CNM). There are also INDIRECT ROLES if you wish: Nurse Educators, Nurse Administrators, Informatics Nurses... to name a few. Make an appointment to interview either by Zoom or in-person. Have a copy of the questions handy when you make the appointment, in case interviewee asks what type of questions. The paper includes these SECTIONS: Introduction: Paragraphs that contain background information on the history of advanced nursing practice in general as well as to specfic traditional APN roles we have today ( NP, CRNA, CNS, CNM); include the start, growth and evolution of the nurse practitioner program and the purpose of the interview in relation to that person's role and your interest within the context of the week's learning outcomes. In the last paragraph of this introduction present your interviewee bygiving full name, office location, contact information, a brief description of the practice setting e (i.e. adult primary care for an NP or the operating room for the CRNA), a brief description of the clinical practice/ environment, and the population cared for. In the paper, include a Level 2 heading: Interview Questions and Answers. List each question and a 2-3 sentences summarizing the responses after each question. What is your official title of your position? Can you briefly describe/explain your advanced practice role (job description)? How long since you held this position. What were your previous positions and why did you leave those positions? What were job requirements for your role? (education and experiential requirements) Do you think you were prepared adequately for your role? What are positive and negative aspects of your position? What are your personal philosophy/goals/visions related to your current position? What do you think is your most significant challenge of your role? What are you doing to overcome the specified challenge? What is your overall impression about your role within the organization? If you could change any aspect of your role, what would that be? How do you incorporate evidence-based practice or research findings in your role? Do you think you are contributing to nursing profession? If so, How do you think you are contributing? What are your thoughts on advancing the nursing discipline? What are your career plans for the next 5 to 10 years? Is there a health policy issue or a practice policy that you feel passionate about? What is your position on this issue? Based on the assigned readings above and based on the answers provided from the interview above, answer the following questions from your point of view: Use Level 2 heading: Student Reflections on APN Role. Write in an essay format- APA style as per SAMPLE STUDENT PAPER. What was the purpose for the initial role of the nurse practitioner, and does it differ from the role of the nurse practitioner in today’s healthcare system? What are elements of role transition from RN to APN? What do you expect to experience in this process of transitioning your role from RN to APN? Reflect on your experiences in nursing, and consider how the role change to NP may challenge your knowledge and skills. Describe a clinical experience where the assessment and plan for treatment was not according to clinical guidelines. What would you have done differently and why? What does professionalism as a nurse practitioner mean to you? Discuss your personal beliefs of the three most important components or identifiers of professionalism as an NP. Discuss how you see the NP practice affecting health outcomes of populations, especially the vulnerable population Conclusion & Summary: what is your overall impression about the interview (explain any insights/knowledge gained/helpful/unhelpful especially in relation to your professional goal as an advanced entry level nurse. Remember in-text citations in APA format, minimum 4 references from peer reviewed journal articles relevant to the advanced nursing practice roles to substantiate/support your views/opinions. Write and Format the paper in a logical, organized flow with Title Page as page 1 with this title: The Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN).
