Develop a 2–3-page narrative for completing your practicum and how the objectives of your practicum course will be met.
Include the following in your narrative.
Five Practicum Goals: Choose at least five practicum goals that relate to the course objectives, and your personal and professional development needs in your practicum setting and educational outcomes (make sure your goals are measurable).
Practicum Schedule: A proposed schedule to meet your goals and the required practicum hours you must accumulate during this course.
Needs Assessment: Describe at least one need in the academic setting with your preceptor to improve learner outcomes. Use the observation tool that you created in MSN 606.
My practicum will be completed under the supervision of my clinical instructor in the Step-Down Unit at Kentfield Hospital San Francisco.
These are my five practicum goals:
Observe and participate in the clinical instruction of at least 10 nursing students throughout the practicum, focusing on clinical reasoning, psychomotor skills, communication, and professionalism.
Provide formative feedback to at least 10 nursing students using evidence-based teaching strategies and the MSN 606 observation tool, with feedback documented after each clinical observation.
Develop and facilitate one evidence-based clinical teaching activity or mini in-service related to the care of patients in the step-down unit by Week 8 of the practicum.
Complete at least five formal student evaluations using the observation tool developed in MSN 606 and discuss evaluation findings with my preceptor to improve consistency and objectivity in student assessment.
Complete weekly reflective journals and meet with my preceptor throughout the practicum to evaluate my teaching effectiveness, identify areas for improvement, and develop strategies to strengthen my role as a future nurse educator.
This is my practicum schedule:
Weeks 1
Meet with my clinical instructor to review practicum expectations and learning objectives.
Become familiar with Kentfield Hospital policies, the step-down unit, clinical objectives, and student expectations.
Observe teaching strategies and interactions between the instructor and nursing students.
Begin using the MSN 606 observation tool during student observations.
Weeks 2
Assist with supervising students during patient care activities.
Practice providing verbal coaching and formative feedback.
Observe student clinical reasoning, medication administration, documentation, and patient communication.
Weeks 3
Complete formal student observations using the MSN 606 observation tool.
Participate in student evaluations with guidance from my preceptor.
Develop and present an evidence-based teaching activity related to step-down nursing care.
Weeks 4
Continue supervising students while increasing independence in clinical teaching.
Analyze common student strengths and learning needs identified through observations.
Meet with my preceptor to discuss teaching effectiveness and strategies for improvement.
Week 5
Complete final evaluations with my preceptor.
Reflect on achievement of practicum goals.
Develop a professional development plan outlining future goals as a nurse educator.
Needs Assessment: During my initial observations with my clinical instructor in the step-down unit at Kentfield Hospital San Francisco, I identified a need to strengthen nursing students' knowledge, confidence, and clinical competency in caring for patients with tracheostomies.
